The Learning Center

Central Christian School desires to equip students to reach their highest God-given potential. The Learning Center (TLC) is designed to give additional support to students with exceptional learning needs. The TLC serves both students with learning disabilities and students identified as gifted. We're committed to reaching all our students and moving them forward in preparation for secondary school.

Special Needs—Wings
Children enroll in the TLC Wings program when the instruction of the regular classroom does not meet all their needs. These students either have a 22:6 plan of accommodations—Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it—or an Individual Student Plan (ISP). TLC Learning Specialists work in collaboration with classroom teachers to carry out the accommodations and/or modifications necessary to ensure a child's academic success, as outlined in the 22:6 Plan or the ISP. Learning Specialists work with children individually and in small groups to strengthen their areas of need.

Gifted Education—Horizons
Our TLC Horizons program meets the needs of students in grades 2-6 who are identified as academically gifted. We allow children to compact their learning time in the homeroom classroom, freeing them to participate in another environment where they are further challenged and encouraged in their areas of strength. Each grade-level group involved in the gifted program receives two hours of educational time in the Horizons room per week, focusing on on a year-long thematic unit from Archeology, Marketing, Brain Research, to Crime Scene Investigation.

Students also extend beyond and delve deeper than the regular classroom level of critical thinking through concepts building, problem solving activities, research techniques, and creativity training. By singling out specific thinking skills and processes, students become aware of each skill in order to utilize those skills most effectively, as well as learning more about themselves as a learner. Horizons encourages endless ideas and open thinking—a hallmark of advanced learning programs—while honoring the truth found in God's Word that we are all gifted by the same Spirit for a variety of purposes (I Corinthians 12:4-6).
