Fine Arts
At Central Christian School, we recognize the value of Fine Arts independently, as well as integrated with our curriculum.
ART
Viewing art as a form of worship, art at CCS concerns itself with truth, goodness, and beauty in order to advance God's glory. Through art class, students are given a place to identify their talents and gifts through responding to God's world. From the framework of Creation-Fall-Redemption-Consummation, our young artists learn to discern the difference between art the way God intended contrasted with the effects of sin on modern expressions of creativity.
Students also learn to appreciate the creative talents of artists in many places, cultures, and time periods. From projects based on early children's literature to replicating masterpieces of Egyptian art and The Renaissance, students incorporate the key elements of art as they explore a variety of mediums. Building on the foundations laid in the early years, our older students go beyond traditional materials and explore fiber arts and pottery.
All students enrolled in full-day Kindergarten through sixth grade participate in our art program.
MUSIC
God gave us music so we may pray without words. Beyond the hymnal, CCS students experience various genres including art music, performance, ballet, opera, folk, and spirituals. Because we are made in God's image, we can create, compose, and respond to His greatness through song.
First graders experience Powell Hall and the St. Louis Symphony. Third graders not only attend an opera, but compose and perform one for parents. Fifth graders study and sing Spirituals in conjunction with their classroom exploration of slavery and the Civil War. Performing with instruments, bodies, and the voice, our four year-olds through our oldest students grow in musical literacy.
All full-day Junior Kindergarten through sixth grade students attend music classes.
We also give students the opportunity to explore their God-given musical talents beyond the classroom.
The CCS Choir consists of fourth through sixth graders and meets weekly after school for rehearsal. Directed by our music teacher, students perform at various events throughout the school year. From our Barnes and Noble Book Fair to our Admissions Open House to local churches, these worshippers impact their audience every time.
The school-wide Christmas program is a highlight for our community each year. Various musical elements are presented centering around God coming to earth in the flesh, bringing the hope of redemption. From Handel’s “Messiah”, to Gospel music, to hand bells and percussion instruments, our students lead their parents and relatives in a genuine worship service.
All third through sixth graders annually produce our Spring Musical, giving them musical theater experience. Concepts learned throughout the year are applied during preparation for the show, including reading music, choral singing, vocal techniques, presentation skills, and team work. All students in these grades sing in the chorus while Summit students (fifth and sixth graders) audition for speaking and solo selections.
FINE ARTS EXTRAGANZA
Our art and music teachers collaborate to co-direct a Fine Arts Extravaganza near the end of the school year. We transform the Garden Level of our school into an art gallery featuring work from all Kindergarten through sixth grade students. Professional artists demonstrate their talents on-site in media such as pottery, illustration, and weaving, as well as interacting with students. The CCS Choir also performs a new musical for the community at large.
